April 2024 - Project Update
The official opening of Barton Park in Banksia will take place on Saturday 4 May.
There is a lot of excitement about this major project that has seen Barton Park upgraded into a welcoming space with accessible facilities, good lighting, walking and cycling connections to open space along the Rockdale Wetlands Corridor.
The growing populations of Arncliffe, Banksia and Wolli Creek as well as the wider Bayside community will also be able to enjoy premier sporting facilities for organised sports and recreational spaces which can be used for family outings, bird watching, exercise and environmental education opportunities.
We are very proud of this new community asset that has been delivered on time and to a high standard. Congratulations to all the staff who worked on delivering this project.

The final Barton Park Masterplan
The Barton Park Recreational Precinct is scheduled for completion in April 2024. A site
inspection was held with Councillors in October 2023 and work is running to program. This
project will deliver much needed recreational facilities in the Wolli Creek/Banksia/Rockdale
area and provides a renewed north/south sharepath along Muddy Creek.
Barton Park recreational precinct upgrade project
We are delivering an exciting new upgrade at Barton Park Banksia.
The upgrade will provide a welcoming space with accessible facilities, good lighting, walking and cycling connections to open space along the Rockdale Wetlands Corridor. In addition, it will provide the growing populations of Arncliffe, Banksia and Wolli Creek access to a variety of recreational activities, including organised sport, family outings, bird watching, and environmental education opportunities.
The project has now moved to the delivery phase. Bayside Mayor Dr Christina Curry and Councillors attended a sod-turning ceremony on Thursday 6 October to mark the start of the Barton Park Recreational upgrade. Read more here.
Background
The masterplan categorises the project into four key zones. The REF relates to the delivery of Zones 1 & 2.
Zone 1 The Active Centre - Active and passive park; large grassed area at the top of the embankment. Designed as the active heart of the new park.
Zone 2 The Waterfront - Foreshore and environment; environmentally significant mangrove trees along Muddy Creek including opportunities to walk and cycle along the foreshore.
Council continues to progress Zone 3 and 4 and will keep the community updated on key developments.
You can view some 3D images of what the buildings and structures will look like or view the final Masterplan here.
Have your say
The Barton Park REF was placed on public exhibition for 60 days from 8 September to 8 November 2021.
The REF was then peer-reviewed by an external planning consultant who also considered the submissions received. The consultant was satisfied that any environmental impacts could be satisfactorily managed. The REF and Part 5 have now been finalised.
Next steps
Council has begun undertaking works to deliver the Barton Park Masterplan.
