Engagement with First Nations People for the Rockdale Green Grid Corridors

Our previous engagement with First Nations people on the Green Grid Corridor project has been instrumental in shaping this initiative. We have incorporated key feedback, including the importance of improving water quality to support local food sources like rock oyster reefs, mullet, and blue-swimmer crabs, as well as enhancing habitats such as seagrass and wetlands. Suggestions include co-designed cultural initiatives with the La Perouse community and local schools, natural play spaces, endemic plant species, and storytelling elements like totems, symbology, and digital songlines to celebrate and share Bidjigal culture. In addition, we have met with the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group to request their input into the project documents, ensuring cultural considerations are integrated.

The Bayside Priority Green Grid Corridors Spatial Framework was endorsed by Council in 2021. This document articulates the vision for potential north-south connections along the Rockdale Wetlands Corridor.

Council recently made a decision to progress with feasibility analysis of a walking and cycling route from Scarborough Park heading south to San Souci, referred to as the Kamay Greenway. Council will work in collaboration with community stakeholders, State government agencies and land owners.

The M6 stage 1 terminates at the northern precinct of Scarborough Park. The overhead footbridge at President Ave, the footpath along President Ave, and the active transport links being constructed by TfNSW. These elements are reflected in the Scarborough Park Masterplan.

Access archery field plans: HERE

We have carefully considered international archery standards in designing the pathway near the archery field to ensure safety and functionality. A safety zone has been incorporated, and options like backstop nets can be incorporated to protect users if full safety offsets cannot be achieved. This approach balances community access and safety while accommodating archery activities.

Scarborough Park is a heritage listed park of approximately 61ha dating back to 1879. Scarborough Park is a historic park in Sydney, retaining significant post-settlement heritage assets within the park boundaries. The most notable heritage items are located in the northern and southern precincts, with the central precinct undergoing the most drastic changes over time. Patmore Swamp, Hawthorne St Reserve and various fig tree plantings are all heritage items at local level. In addition, State Heritage listed Toomevara Lane Chinese Market Gardens are located immediately adjacent to the park in the northern precinct. Although currently visually separated and screened from the park, potential impacts on this item must be considered at both masterplan and future detail design stages.

Partial funding via a Planning Agreement between Council and JQZ Nine Pty Ltd has enabled the development of the draft masterplan, and some of the connections and pathways. Other potential sources of funding include infrastructure contributions, stormwater levy, and infrastructure levy. Council will also seek grant funding to support this project.

After community engagement, we will consider the feedback, review and refine the masterplan. We will present the refined masterplan to Council for adoption in 2025. We will update the HYS webpage to keep you informed of the process. The detail design and construction of the pathway network is scheduled for 2025 subject to adoption of the masterplan.
