Safer Way Stage 3 - Implementation

Background

Bayside Council is proud to be partnering with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) on the Safer Cities: Her Way project.

We are one of ten Councils in NSW selected to participate in this program to trial strategies that make public spaces around transport hubs feel safer and more welcoming, particularly for women, girls and gender-diverse people.

Community engagement to date

Council has taken a collaborative approach and adopted a co-design method to develop strategies with local women, girls, and gender-diverse people to improve perceptions of safety when walking to transport hubs. The co-design process was undertaken from April to June 2023, and 141 were involved via different engagement methods, including a survey and 'walk shops' at Mascot, Arncliffe and Rockdale Stations Precincts.

Click here to read the Community Engagement report from the co-design process. Thank you to everyone who participated in this process to help make Bayside safer for everyone.

Proposed locations and improvements

Through the co-design process, two locations were selected for the first-round pilot project in Bayside:

  • King Street Mall and Astridge Lane, Rockdale
  • Laycock Walk, Mascot

The two locations are identified as high-priority spaces for improvement as an outcome of the co-design process. We acknowledge the issues identified in the Arncliffe study area, and proposed improvements will be considered in future financial years.

Based on the outcome of the co-design process, we are proposing to implement the following safety improvements across Rockdale and Mascot to make the public places feel safer and more comfortable:

  • Lighting: improve existing lighting and introduce creative/fun lighting installations.
  • Maintenance: improve the maintenance and upkeep of each location to create pleasant public spaces for the community.
  • Place-making: provide infrastructure that will help make the spaces more inviting.

King Street Mall and Astridge Lane, Rockdale

The proposed improvements for King Street Mall, Rockdale, include:

  • Creative lighting, for example, fiesta lighting and lanterns in the festive season
  • Rearrangement and upgrade of street furniture to create a sense of community and encourage people to meet and socialise
  • Playground extension and upgrade
  • Improve the planting selection for better landscape and visual amenity
  • Temporary closure to vehicles on King Street Mall to create a safer environment for pedestrians (subject to regulatory approval)

The proposed improvements for Astridge Lane, Rockdale, include:

  • Pavement art mural in Astridge Lane to make the place more vibrant
  • Pavement art mural at street crossing at Geeves Ave to improve legibility and contribute to traffic calming (subject to regulatory approval)
  • Removal of bollards at both ends of Astridge Lane to improve accessibility (subject to regulatory approval)

Laycock Walk, Mascot

The proposed improvements at Laycock Walk, Mascot, include:

  • Fiesta lighting, for example, fairy lights, tree lighting, and lanterns in the festive season
  • Improved seating arrangement to create an additional waiting area close to the busy bus stop
  • Projective lighting to make the space more dynamic
