Works are anticipated to commence early Autumn 2026.

The nearest playgrounds are Chapel St Reserve (400m to the south) and Rockdale Park or Gujaga Park (1km to the east).

Given the site’s age and popularity, the playspace has outlived its useful life. This project aims to revitalise the area with safe, suitable amenities that enhance local activities and foster opportunities for community interaction.

Both proposed designs include safety features such as border seating that act as barriers along the Market Street end. Fully fenced areas can limit accessibility for people using mobility devices, so instead, inclusive barrier configurations will be used to support safety while maintaining access. As with all public play spaces, children must be actively supervised by a carer at all times.

Council follows the State Government’s “Everyone Can Play” guidelines, Australian Standards and best practice. Playspaces are designed to be as inclusive as possible within the budget allocated and allowing for certain site limitations and features. Inclusive playspaces invite people of all ages, abilities, cultures and genders to come together to play and socialise.

The rubber undersurfacing will be replaced. Rubber improves access by people of all abilities.

Council are considering a small extension of the playspace to the west under the tree but this needs to be balanced with other activities and pedestrian use in the mall. The small area available limits the type of play equipment that can be provided.
