Project Background

We have embarked on a 50-year sustainable management project focused on Lady Robinson Beach in Botany Bay (Kamay). Over the years, a changing climate and human activities like the development of Port Botany and Sydney Airport have significanlty altered the shoreline, causing persistent erosion and presenting other challenges.

Despite past efforts to stabilise and restore the beach, ongoing changes in the shoreline have prompted the need for a more comprehensive and sustainable approach. Our project aims to address these challenges by adopting a targeted foreshore management plan.

This plan seeks to enhance and maintain the foreshore where feasible whilst remaining agile in our management to adapt and accommodate our ever-changing shoreline.

Foreshore study - managing a shifting shoreline

Based on coastal studies we have condensed management into three main zones:

Zone A - Resilient Zone B - Restore, and Zone C - Protect.

Through the implementation of zoned spaces, council can focus on crafting detailed designs tailored to the unique needs of each area.

Zones A and B represent popular areas for beach recreation. Areas marked as Zone A are more naturally resilient to shoreline changes. Zone B areas require intervention to restore and maintain the sandy beach.

Zone C acknowledges the natural instability of our shoreline, and aims to preserve and protect the foreshore whilst supporting the natural environment.

Each of these zones demands a customised approach to safeguarding the foreshore, ensuring community enjoyment while prioritising the protection of our environment and natural habitats.

You can read the more detailed information in our summary of the management plan here.
