Background

The Greening Our City tree planting program is part of a push by the NSW Government to plant 5 million trees across NSW to increase tree canopy coverage to an average of 40% in each local government area. The percentage of tree canopy across Bayside is one of the lowest in Sydney at around 12%. The average is around 20% canopy cover in other Councils in the Greater Sydney area. In 2019, Bayside Council received grants from the NSW Government to plant 2,000 trees in streets and parks across the council area. This project is coming to end in December 2022.

The project

Council is committed to increasing tree canopy cover for several reasons, including:

  • Reducing the urban heat island effect
  • Increasing biodiversity
  • Providing habitat for native species
  • Connecting existing green spaces
  • Improving streetscapes and amenities for local residents and visitors

It is also widely understood that trees in urban areas affect people positively, from reducing stress and improving well-being, to increasing the value of properties in the area.

The map below shows where tree planting is occurring in the Bayside area as a result of the grant.

Community support for the project

In 2022, Council engaged the community in developing the Community Strategic Plan, Bayside 2032. The community told us that by 2032, they want Bayside to be green, resilient, and sustainable. In response, Council has committed to implementing a number of strategies to achieve this vision, including a commitment to increasing Bayside's tree canopy coverage from 12% to 20% over the next decade.
