Background

Council is updating its policy for managing unattended property in public spaces, including abandoned vehicles, trailers and other items left in streets, parks and public areas.

The legislation that previously governed these matters, the Impounding Act 1993, was replaced by the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021, which commenced on 1 November 2022. Council has already incorporated the requirements of the new legislation into its processes.

The updated policy has been reviewed and updated to ensure it reflects the contemporary legislative framework and provides clear guidance for managing unattended property in public spaces.
