Bayside Council's draft Car Share Policy responds to growing car share membership in Bayside and increasing demand for flexible transport choices. The aim of the Policy is to formalise the management of existing car share spaces and the assessment of proposals for new spaces on Council-owned and managed public spaces.

We are seeking community feedback to help shape the car share policy.

Car sharing allows people to use a car for short periods of times and only pay for their usage. It is a membership-based service available to anyone with a drivers licence and can be a convenient and cheaper way to drive instead of owning a car.

Vehicles are located in either fixed locations, or as floating vehicles, and are available on demand, on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Car Share schemes provide a number of potential benefits to the community, not just scheme members as they can:

reduce the level of private vehicle ownership

reduce pressure on parking, as one car/space can cater for many residents

reduce traffic congestion caused by drivers who are traffic ‘cruising’ as they look for parking.

Car share schemes also provide a transport option for residents and community members who don't or can't own their own car. This policy is a way of formalising Council's support for car share operators and the benefits that car sharing provides to the local community both socially, environmentally and financially.
