Bayside Council is inviting feedback on its first draft Arts and Culture Strategy, Connected in a Creative City 2023-2026.

This three-year strategy includes a vision for Bayside’s creative future to inform policy, planning, programming, and funding priorities. It also includes objectives and actions to support the growth and diversity of creative activities and infrastructure in Bayside and respond to community needs.

Background

Bayside is looking to bolster its emerging creative communities while highlighting the already established creative organisations and artists in the area. Musical societies, theatres, ceramic studios and local artists have a strong presence in our LGA and their participation numbers are growing steadily.

Our LGA is experiencing an increase in creative workers, this sits in comparison to surrounding councils who are experiencing a decline in their creative residents. This change may be due to increased housing and studio costs in areas that have been historically seen as creative suburbs. Bayside has an increase of 126 residents who categorise themselves as creative workers from the recent 2021 census data.

The Draft Arts and Culture Strategy looks to foster the creative output of our community and encourage the new surge of creativity that is flourishing throughout our neighbourhoods.

The draft strategy

The draft Strategy was informed by national, state and local policies, best practice approaches and extensive community engagement.

From this engagement, we heard that our community values:

  • Increased support for local creatives
  • Opportunities to highlight First Nations heritage and culture
  • Raised awareness of the thriving cultural ecosystem in Bayside
  • Increased local and international tourism in our area
  • New partnership opportunities with various public and private organisations at local, state and national levels
  • Bayside’s arts infrastructure portfolio to grow
  • Creative programs across Bayside, where residents can be creative in their neighbourhood.

The vision

Bayside is Sydney’s gateway, a place steeped in history, where new ideas connect with traditional customs. Our city’s unique stories are told through its artistic and cultural output.

Through a proactive arts and culture strategy, Bayside will become a thriving creative cultural exchange.

Bayside aims to bolster its growing arts community, supporting the region's thriving cultural ecosystem while encouraging a healthy creative economy.

The purpose

To develop arts and culture at a local level with a meaningful and long term strategy, bolstering creativity across our neighbourhoods and increasing Bayside’s arts and culture profile.

This new strategy has two key objectives:

  • Infrastructure - Bayside will be a creative hub, celebrating and supporting our unique arts and culture
  • Public programs - Bayside will be a creative destination, a place where everyone can be creative in their own neighbourhood and visitors enjoy cultural experiences
