Greening Bayside

Making Bayside a green, leafy and sustainable place by 2030 is one of the key themes of our Community Strategic Plan.

To achieve this we are Greening Bayside by planting more trees in our streets, parks and natural open spaces.

By planting more trees, we can:

  • provide shade to cool our homes and suburbs,
  • create habitats for our native animals, and
  • make our community beautiful.

Our Work

We will start our work by focusing on areas with lower tree cover.

In 2019, we successfully applied to the NSW Government's 5 Million Trees for Greater Sydney grant, to co-fund $200,000 for tree planting. With this, we will plant 800 trees across Banksmeadow, Eastgardens, Hillsdale, Mascot, Kyeemagh and Sans Souci. In these suburbs, less than 10% of land is currently shaded by trees.

800 trees is just the start, we are already planning for our next round of planting and have some locations in mind. Our Quick Poll 'Where should we plant next?' is now closed, thank you to those who contributed!

We started planting our 800 trees in June, and expect to be finished around October!

The trees are currently being planted in streets and parks across Botany, Eastgardens, Hillsdale, Kyeemagh, Mascot and Sans Souci.
Keep an eye out for these important little trees and please report any maintenance issues to us.

Our first initiative is to plant 800 trees across Banksmeadow, Eastgardens, Hillsdale, Mascot, Kyeemagh and Sans Souci. Planting will be done between March and June 2020. We have selected these suburbs to start with because less than 10% of their land is covered by trees.

    We will plant 800 trees:

    • 401 along streets and main roads
    • 159 in parks and reserves
    • 240 in natural areas (such as wetlands and creek fronts).
70% will be sourced from the local Bayside Nursery, and 36 different species will be planted. You can use our Tree Map to check exactly where we will plant each tree.

This intiative encourages all Sydney residents to help the State Government and local councils plant 5 million trees across Greater Sydney by 2030.
