Update

Thank you for your input. The final version of the Policy was adopted by Council on 29 September 2022.

Background

Council recognises the health and well-being benefits to our community and their dogs through access to dog exercise areas. Council is responsible for the management of public open spaces, including dog off-leash areas.

The draft Dog Off-Leash policy provides a strategic, structured, and integrated approach to planning and managing dog activities in our public open spaces. It will guide dog owners and handlers on how to manage dogs in public spaces and their legal requirements and responsibilities to ensure that these areas can be enjoyed by the whole community.

The policy aligns with the Bayside Keeping of Animals Policy 2020, it does not include other companion animals as specified in the Companion Animals Act 1998 (e.g. cat ownership).
