Rockdale City Library Opens Saturday 30 July 2016

After 32 years, the Rockdale community is going to finally have a new library. Due to open on Saturday 30 July the new library will have many new features including:
  • State of the art technology
  • Interactive space for children
  • Interactive local history space
  • Increased opening hours
  • Shared entrance with Customer Service and Development Advisory Services so there is a one stop shop
  • Self managed loans and reserves
  • 20 public PC's
  • More community programs.
The Library will open to the public at 9 am on Saturday 30 July with a variety of activities for all the family.

The new opening hours for Rockdale Library will be:
  • Monday - Thursday 8.30am - 8.00pm
  • Friday 8.30am - 5.00pm
  • Saturday 9.00am - 5.00pm
  • Sunday 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Branch Libraries will return to normal operating hours from Monday 18 July.

Opening hours for the following branch libraries are:

Arncliffe, Bexley North and Sans Souci Libraries
  • Monday - Friday 10.00am - 6.00pm and
  • Saturday 10.00am - 1.00pm
Bexley Library
  • Monday and Wednesday 10.00am - 6.00pm
Brighton Le Sands Library
  • Tuesday and Thursday 10.00am - 6.00pm

    Rockdale City Library Update

    The Rockdale City Library continues to take shape with the building’s metal roof being installed prior to the end of 2015. Construction of the façade has now commenced, with structural steel being installed during January 2016. Internal services and finishes are progressing well, and the new library is expected to open in June 2016.

    The foundation stone for the new Rockdale City Library was officially laid on Saturday 18th July 2015, and the then Mayor Councillor Shane O’Brien unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

    Rockdale City Library Update

    The Rockdale City Library continues to take shape with the building’s metal roof being installed prior to the end of 2015. Internal services and finishes are progressing well, and the new library is expected to open in June 2016.

    The foundation stone for the new Rockdale City Library was officially laid on Saturday 18th July 2015, and the then Mayor Councillor Shane O’Brien unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

    Rockdale City Library Advisory Committee members, local school students and members of the project building team also attended the event that marks a major milestone in the construction of the Rockdale City Library.
    "This is a very exciting moment,” said former Mayor Councillor Shane O’Brien.

    "This project is testament to my fellow Councillors, Council staff and the Rockdale City Library Advisory Committee members and their passionate support for this excellent centre of learning in the cultural hub of Rockdale City.” The new library is expected to open in June 2016.

    The 'Aerial Construction Progress' slideshow shows the works on the new Library which commenced with the demolition of the existing buildings in November 2014.

    Council at 20 February 2013 Council Meeting endorsed the preferred option, identified as Option 3A, for the construction of a new library building at 444 and 446 Princes Highway Rockdale, adjacent to the Town Hall.

    The community had the opportunity to provide feedback by means of a survey questionnaire during November and December 2012. The received feedback results are available to view in the reference materials.

    The Central Library Development Advisory Committee that was established in 2009 will continue to participate in the next stages of the project as it progresses through detailed design and construction.

    Council conducted extensive engagement with the community from May to early June 2012. The Community Feedback report details the feedback we received.

    Council conducted further engagement to ensure we are responding to your needs, shaping and enlivening the Rockdale Town Centre and providing high standard services to the community into the future.

    As part of the next phase of engagement Council invited the community to share feedback and ideas about a new Library and Civic Centre.The community was encouraged to complete a survey to help identify the things that are important to residents in a modern library.
